BGMEA plea for more container trains, yard

Leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Monday urged Communications Adviser MA Matin to increase the number of container trains and establish a separate container yard for the apparel exporters.
They also requested for improving the quality of service rendered by the container operators, establishing an Inland Container Deport (ICD) at Pangaon of Narayanganj, establishing ICD in Gazipur under private management, constructing the Dhaka-Chittagong highway with six lanes and to create an alternative road of this highway soon, said a press release Monday.
During the meeting, president of the BGMEA, Anwar-ul-Alam Chowdhury said garment products of 93 garment factories worth Tk 1.0 billion was damaged due to inundation by rainfall in Chittagong June 11.
"If the standard of service rendered by the ICDs could not be further improved, the garment owners might face such losses in future as well," the BGMEA chief said.
He also demanded government compensation for the affected garment owners to recoup their losses caused by the deluge in Chittagong, the press release said.
