CHATTOGRAM, Apr 04: The work of Bhandal Jhuri Water Supply Project, a water supply plant undertaken by Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Ctg WASA), is going on in full swing.

More than 90 per cent work of the 60-million-litre capacity project has already been completed. The total project is likely to be completed within June this year, sources said.

Managing Director of Ctg WASA A K M Fazlullah said, "Around 90 per cent work of the project has been completed. I hope that the total construction work will be completed within the extended schedule of the project by June this year."

Mr Fazlullah said the production of Ctg WASA now meets only 62 per cent water demand of city dwellers - the demand is on the rise keeping pace with the growing number of industries and city dwellers.

"We will be able to meet the rising demand of water after completion of the Bhandal Jhuri project."

The WASA is currently supplying around 340 million litres of water daily from Mohora and Rangunia water plants through pipelines against the demand of 500-550 million litres.

The Bhandal Jhuri project, which includes a 60-kilometre water transmission line, a water treatment plant and two water reservoirs, will generate some 60 million litres of water daily, said the WASA managing director.

The water from this plant will be supplied to Chattogram city and some parts of South Chattogram, including Patiya, Anwara, Karnaphuli and Boalkhali upazilas.

Korean Exim Bank is financing the project with a soft loan of $47 million from the resources of the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), Mr Fazlullah added.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project on January 5, 2016. The deadline for completing the project was September, 2020. But the ECNEC extended the deadline until June 2023. It also approved Tk 9.58 billion more for the project. As a result, the total cost of the project has increased to Tk 19.95 billion.

Ctg WASA appointed South Korean consulting firms - Dong Myeong Engineering Consultants, Architecture Company Ltd and Korea and Consortium - for submitting reports in this regard. As per the reports, the WASA is continuing the work.
