BIRDEM striking doctors ask ACC to take account of hospital's income

June 28, 2007 00:00:00

The agitating indoor medical officers of the city's BIRDEM hospital Wednesday urged the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to take account of the hospital's income, as they alleged its high-handed authorities made a lot of money, reports UNB.
On the third day of their strike, the strikers told the newsmen that the authorities of the famous trust hospital of BIRDEM earn billions of taka per year, but "do not disclose the amount of money to anyone, even to the media".
The country's only specialised hospital for innumerable diabetic patients, as well as for other ailing people, the Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM) remained in a serious crisis, as the physicians continued their work abstention for the third consecutive day to press for regularisation of their jobs.
Around 300 physicians of the hospital, who were appointed on three-year contract, went on the non-stop work-stoppage following a notification that the contracts of those indoor medical officers who have completed three years "could not be renewed".
