BIWTA pulls down 39 city structures

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) continued its ongoing eviction drive against unauthorised structures along Buriganga River in the capital on Tuesday.
On the day, the BIWTA drive bulldozed a total of 39 structures from Basila and Katasur parts of the river, which is gradually getting narrower due to illegal occupation by various influential quarters.
BIWTA deputy director (Dhaka Port) Md. Mizanur Rahman said they resumed the drive in the morning at Basila and Katasur points as part of the government's plan to protect the river, considered a lifeline of the city.
He said they demolished plot boundary wall of a real estate company - Amin Momin Housing Limited - that was illegally built by encroaching the river channel and filling it up.
BIWTA will restart the eviction drive today (Wednesday), and continue from Basila to Gabtoli area, its sources said.
