BIWTA resumes eviction drive on river banks today

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) will relaunch eviction drive on the bank of the River Buriganga and Turag today (Tuesday), an official said.

"We will start eviction drives again from Tuesday (today) against illegal encroachment on the River banks of the Buriganga and Turag," AKM Arif Uddin (Joint Director, Port) of BIWTA told the FE.

The shipping secretary Md Abdus Samad along with other officials of the departments concerned visited some areas that were recovered during the recent drives against illegal encroachment of the Buriganga river banks on the day in the capital.

BIWTA has started eviction/ demolition of illegal structures on the bank of the River Buriganga since January last.

It had carried out eviction drives in four phases. The first phase started from January 29-31, the second phase between February 6-8, third phase between February 12-14 and the fourth phase between February 18-20 last.

So far, it has demolished a total of 1,721 illegal structures at Basila, Kamrangirchar, Sadarghat and some other parts of the capital.

The BIWTA which is under the ministry of shipping has taken a project worth Tk 8.48 billion.

About the future plan to recover lands, the BIWTA said they will build 19 jetties in different areas including Amin Bazar, Gabtoli, Kanchpur, Tanbazar, Machuwa Bazar, and Khanpur.

The authority will also build about 50-km walkways, plant saplings along the walkways and set up three eco-parks at Shinnirtek, Tongi and Ashulia under the project.
