Bangladesh raw jute exporters have expressed their mixed reactions over the proposed budget for fiscal year 2014-15, saying there is no mention in the budget about protecting the interest of the country's raw jute exporters and traders.
The leaders of Bangladesh Jute Association (BJA) urged the Finance Minister to take a decision on resolving the jute sector's existing crisis.
They said of the total production, two-thirds of raw jute was being used in the local jute mills and the rest was being exported.
They said the demand for jute was increasing day by day. The raw jute exporters earn foreign currencies equivalent to Tk 15 billion to Tk 20 billion each year, they added.
They noted that the sector had also been ignored in the 2013-14 budget. As a hundred per cent export-oriented sector, it is necessary to address the raw jute export in the national budget, they said.
The association leaders, however, hailed the proposed budget saying the government has waived import duty on capital machinery and has not hiked taxes for exports, and also tried to offer incentives.
