The state-run Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) has sought Tk 5.0 billion from the government for payment of salary and festival bonus of its employees as well as purchase of raw jute and payment of dues.

The corporation, through the ministry of textiles and jute (MoTJ), recently wrote a letter to the ministry of finance (MoF) for disbursement of the fund.

The MoTJ secretary and BJMC chairman held meeting with the finance minister recently, and requested him to disburse the fund.    "We sought the government's approval to disburse Tk 5.0 billion for payment of salary and Eid bonus of our employees as well as purchase of raw jute for the next season and clear dues," BJMC director (marketing) Babul Chandra Roy told the FE Friday.

He said out of Tk 5.0 billion, Tk 1.0 billion is needed for payment of salary and Eid bonus of 80,000 employees of the BJMC-run 26 mills.

"If we get the money, it will be possible for BJMC to provide salary and festival bonus to the employees before the Eid-ul-Fitr. We hope we will be able to do it before the festival."

Mr Roy said they are constantly working to increase sale of jute goods, such as jute sacks and hessian, to different public-sector organisations.

He said BJMC sells jute sacks and hessian to Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC), Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC), the ministry of food (MoF) and other organisations.

"We sold jute goods worth Tk 3.0 billion in the internal market during the fiscal year 2013-14. The amount is 30 per cent of our total sale. We are trying to increase internal sale to nearly 50 per cent within the next few years," the BJMC official added.
