BNP alleges wilful delay in probe over BDR carnage

May 15, 2009 00:00:00

Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Thursday staged a countrywide human-chain demonstration against what they said government 'attempt to hide the real culprits' involved in staging the carnage at the BDR Headquarters and demanded that the mystery behind the mayhem be unveiled immediately, report agencies.
Led by BNP central leaders, the party activists formed the human chain in the city from Jatrabari in the east to Gabtali in the west standing on the roadsides. The hour-long programme started at 11:00am and ended at 12 noon.
The one-hour programme passed off rather peacefully excepting a little police action in Savar area. The demo was also arranged to press for quick and fair investigation of the Peelkhana killings and an end to government's 'vindictive' behaviour with the opposition in its bid to divert public attention from the BDR headquarters incident.
BNP Secretary General Khondaker Delwar Hossain and other central leaders led the programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club. The BNP secretary general, however, fell sick at around 11:17am while talking to reporters shortly after he stood in the queue locking hands with party colleagues to form the cross-capital human chain. He was being rushed to hospital, but, on the way, he quickly recovered and took part in the programme at Shahbagh area.
At Savar bus stand on the outskirts of the city, truncheon-wielding police chased away some activists of BNP during the human-chain programme.
