The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) hopes Nobel laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus will handle the current fluid situation prudently and restore democracy in the country as head of an interim government.

"The faster Dr Yunus brings back democracy in the country, the quicker he will succeed," BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Thursday.

He said this to the media while visiting injured students who are now undergoing treatment at Orthopaedic Hospital in the capital.

"Dr Yunus is ours and he's the representative of both students and the masses. The entire nation has vested responsibility in him. A successful man like him having the skills of competent leadership will be able to control the situation."

"Law and order must be restored at the earliest. The power (after election) must be handed over to the democratically elected government. The economy must be saved. We have called for holding the general election within the next three months," continued Mr Fakhrul.

About the current situation, the BNP leader said, "The problem arises in the absence of democracy here."

As per a list provided by the hospital authorities from July 28 till August 08, he said 417 were released after treatment and 124 are still undergoing treatment.

According to Mr Fakhrul, 10 to 15 persons have lost their legs in injuries recently, adding that three died from their injuries.

Students and labourers in large numbers sustained injuries seriously, he went on to say.

"The autocrat government has fled the country following a strong movement waged by students and political parties."

"I salute and greet the students," cited Mr Fakhrul.
