BNP's National Standing Committee has demanded that the government hand over power to a non-party dispensation to facilitate the prompt holding of a fresh national election, reports bdnews24.com.
BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said in a media release Friday that the party's highest policymaking body raised the demand at a meeting Thursday night.
The release said: "Parliament, formed through the Jan 5 voter-less election amid people's spontaneous boycott, has no validity. The government and parliament are illegal, immoral and unconstitutional."
The committee demanded the handing over power to a non-party caretaker government "to hold a free and fair election, acceptable to all, and participated by all political parties, promptly to overcome the present situation".
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia presided over the meeting at her Gulshan office. However, the leaders who attended the meeting were tight-lipped about the issues discussed.
The resolution said: "The government has turned Bangladesh into a terrorist country through rampant killings, forced disappearance and oppression of opposition leaders and activists, and the destruction of democracy with a sinister motive to exterminate political opponents.""They've snatched away the right of the opposition to hold meetings, rallies and processions."The party demanded an end to killings and oppression of the BNP-led 19-Party Alliance leaders, and freedom to hold meetings and rallies.The party top brass alleged that alliance leaders and activists, picked up on the basis of a list, prepared by the 'illegal' government after the election, were being killed in 'staged gunfights'.
