The Bridges Division has estimated damages to assets at Tk 1.2 billion, including Tk 650 million for torching 57 vehicles, during the student-led quota-reform movement on July 19.
An enquiry committee earlier formed to assess the loss submitted a report to the Bridges Division on Tuesday, citing damage to the entire electric system, lifts, computers, transport and first two floors of Setu Bhaban.
Earlier, the loss was estimated at Tk 4.0 billion soon after the incidents by an incensed mob through calculating instant damage to first three floors of the 11-storey building and vehicles parked inside the compound.
According to officials, the enquirers have said top floors of the building can be used with caution after the installation of electric system and fire extinguisher.
The most damaging part of the building is its switchboard, solar panel, fire alarm system, gas system and substation, they say.
The Public Works Department has also monitored the building and allowed the Bridges Division to use its upper portion from the first three floors.
Sources said 250-300 unidentified people stormed Setu Bhaban on July 19 and vandalised all vehicles and motorbikes parked inside, and ransacked different sheds and rooms. They later set the vehicles on fire.
The officials said most of the vehicles which included Pajero and Prado cars, ambulance, microbus, minibus, seven motorcycles and sedan cars.
Asked how the estimate has been cut from the earlier calculation, an enquirer told the FE that it was initially assumed that Setu Bhaban might be rebuilt.
However, bridges secretary Mohammad Monjur Hossain said full-fledged work would take time as they could not use the building before the restoration of the electric system, lifts and central air-conditioning system.
