RAJSHAHI, Sept 1 (bdnews24.com): British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury expressed the hope that the ban on indoor political activities would be lifted soon.
The British high commissioner said this while exchanging views with district election and administration officials at a meeting here Saturday.
Election Commissioner M Sakhawat Hossain was present on the occasion.
Choudhury also said the UK would provide more financial assistance for the voter identity (ID) cards.
Expressing satisfaction at the initiative to prepare voter and national ID cards, he said all irrespective of religion and colour are getting national identity cards - the initiative is praiseworthy.
He said it would remain a milestone in the history of Bangladesh.
Sakhawat Hossain said, "The government is supporting implementation of the election roadmap and discussion with the political parties. I hope the ban on indoor politics will go. The government will create an opportunity for the election commission to hold discussions with the political parties."
However, Hossain said that if, for some reason, the ban remained on indoor politics, there would be no problem holding discussions with political parties.
"All of us want elections. However, I hope that the discussion will be fruitful. I do not want to deviate from the election roadmap", he said.
Deputy commissioner Khalilur Rahman, district election officer Syed Mohammad Musa and army officer Abu Taher were also present at the meeting.
After the meeting, Choudhury and Hossain visited the voter registration centres at Madar Buksh Home Economics College and Barendra College.
