BSAMA clarification

The Bangladesh Sulphuric Acid Manufacturers Association (BSAMA) has clarified its position regarding a report headlined 'Supply woes deepen sulphuric acid crisis' published in the April 30, 2026 issue of The Financial Express.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, BSAMA said, "There is no artificial shortage or syndicate in the sulphuric acid market. Sulphuric acid production is a continuous industrial process, where any deliberate disruption would cause severe operational damage and financial loss."

The association emphasised that Bangladesh is fully dependent on imported sulphur, and current supply pressures are driven by  global geopolitical instability, shipping disruptions, and international supply chain constraints.

Despite these challenges, domestic manufacturers have consistently maintained stable production and supply to meet national demand, it added.

However, BSAMA raises grave concern over the unregulated import of low-quality and recycled sulphuric acid from India, which is damaging domestic industries and industrial equipment, creating unfair market competition, and threatening the livelihoods of over 500,000 workers directly and indirectly.

Sulphuric acid is a strategic industrial chemical, essential for sectors including water treatment, fertiliser, textiles, pharmaceuticals, batteries, steel, and power generation.

BSAMA added that continued dumping of substandard acid could lead to collapse of local industries, increased dependency on imports, and long-term risks to national economic security.
