The telecom regulatory authority is going to introduce a policy to reward the best performing cell phone operator by setting three criteria in an effort to encourage them to meet compliance.
Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Authority (BTRC) plans to introduce the award system from next year to recognise the services of the cell phone operators.
There will be three criteria for selecting the best cell phone company that include compliance, high revenue generation, providing quality service and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
BTRC Chairman Sunil Kanti Bose said as a regulator the BTRC should not only penalise the cell phone operators but keep provisions to encourage and reward them.
"Assessment of cell phone operators' performance will pave the way for expanding their business into other countries," he said.
It would be a "status" for the regulators as compliant and best performing operators, which will increase level of confidence among the subscribers, he said.
Appreciating different social welfare activities being carried out by the cell phone operators, including the Grameenphone, BTRC chief said such activities should be recognised by evaluating their interventions in an organised manner.
He said the proposal will be placed before the commission soon for approval.
BTRC will collect details of CSR activities of the mobile phone operators to assess their performances.
Head of Corporate Communications of Grameenphone Tahmid Azzizul Huq appreciated the move terming it 'encouraging'.
"Such initiatives from regulators will lead the companies to invest more in public welfare," he added.
Banglalink Senior Director, Legal and Regulatory Affairs Zakiul Islam said the regulators need to assess the output before taking initiatives to introduce such measures.
"We need to know the details about the matter on which areas the regulators plan to recognise the services of the cell phone operators," he added.
