Budget session ends

The second budget session of the ninth parliament ended Thursday after continuing for 33 working days.
The parliament session was prorogued after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave her winding up speech. Deputy speaker Shawkat Ali read out the prorogation message from president M Zillur Rahman who convenes parliament after every 60 days in line with the constitutional guidelines.
The session was convened on June 2 to place the biggest ever budget of Tk 1.32 trillion on June 10 and it spent 40 hours and 44 minutes discussing the budget and 220 MPs took part in the discussion. Of the total, two hours were spent on the supplementary budget.
The opposition party was present on the first day but remained absent for the rest of the session.
The session passed Finance Bill, 2010 and Appropriation Bill, 2010 giving effect to the government revenue and expenditure for the current fiscal.
Thirty-two bills were placed before the session for consideration and out of the bills, 24 were passed by voice vote.
