Bullish trend returns

Dhaka stocks returned to bullish trend in the week that ended Thursday after the three weeks of bear-run.
The benchmark DSE General Index (DGEN) gained 125.62 points or 2.29 per cent to close at 5615.29, riding mainly on financials.
The broader All-shares Price Index (DSI) rose 113.96 points or 2.53 per cent to 4616.55 while the DSE-20 blue chip index ended 74.06 points or 2.55 per cent higher at 2978.72.
Banking issues -- second largest sector in DSE -- gained by 6.33 per cent and turnover in this sector rose more than 100 per cent.
Life insurers marked a significant rise of 13.23 per cent during the week. Leasing or non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) and general insurers climbed up 3.39 per cent and 3.88 per cent respectively.
The largest sector - telecommunications - gained marginally by 0.63 per cent while energy sector advanced by 1.25 per cent. Cement sector rose 2.99 per cent and tannery 1.39 per cent. Pharmaceuticals, the only major sector, declined in the week.
Out of 267 issues traded, 167 ended positive, 86 negative, three remained unchanged and 11 were not traded.
Market capitalisation increased by 4.8 per cent to Tk 234.18 billion, boosted by listing of Khulna Power Company Ltd on the prime bourse.
Average turnover in the closing week was Tk 10.7 billion, up by 32.9 per cent over the previous week's Tk 8.1 billion.
Out of the five trading sessions in the week, the market gained in three, while total turnover increased in every session.
On the opening day of the week Sunday, the market was down as DGEN lost 0.41 per cent.
On Monday, the market turned around with DGEN gaining 1.13 per cent. On Tuesday, DGEN advanced further 1.44 per cent.
On Wednesday, the market fell 0.21 per cent as investors booked profit on GP and banking stocks. On the closing day of the week, the market finished higher as DGEN gained 0.33 per cent.
Beximco Ltd, the flagship company of industrial conglomerate, topped the turnover leader for the second week in a row with shares worth Tk 4.67 billion traded.
Other week's turnover leaders were Beximco Pharma, Grameenphone, Bextex, DESCO, Premier Bank, Social Islami Bank, Summit Power, LankaBangla Finance and Prime Finance.
The prominent gainers included National Life Insurance, Sandhani Life Insurance, People's Leasing, United Leasing, Popular Life Insurance, Al-Arafah Islami Bank, EXIM Bank, Fidelity Assets and Securities and Bangladesh Finance.
Modern Industries, City Bank, Pioneer Insurance, Eastern Lubricants, Gemini Sea Food, Trust Bank, Bangas, ACI, ACI Formulations and Green Delta Insurance were the major losers.
