Transport operators resumed bus services on long routes on Thursday night after remaining suspended for more than a month in the face of growing arson attacks on vehicles.
The buses resumed the night-time services following a decision to this effect at a meeting between State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan and transport leaders at the Bangladesh Secretariat on the day.
Emerging from the meeting, secretary general of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity Khandaker Enayet Ullah told the reporters that they agreed to resume transport services on the country's highways during night.
As per the decision, long-haul buses started plying from 9:00 pm on Thursday, as the government promised all sorts of security measures to protect vehicles on the highways from arsonists, he added. On February 9, the authorities concerned instructed the transport owners not to operate buses on the highways after 9:00 pm, as arson attacks on vehicles continued unabated across the country.
Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan and State Minister for LGRD Mashiur Rahman Ranga attended the meeting, among others. Shajahan Khan heads Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation, while Ranga is the president of the transport owners' body.
