Businesses demand exemplary punishment for killers

The country's leading businesses Sunday urged the government to give exemplary punishment to those involved in the killings at Peelkhana Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) headquarters in the city.

They were addressing a condolence meeting organised by the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) at its office in the city.

"What happened on Wednesday at the Peelkhana, is a rare incidence in the world, we condemn the incidence," Annisul Huq, FBCCI president added.

Annisul Huq pledged that they would provide assistance in all forms to the bereaved families. "We want to stand beside the bereaved families. If necessary we will help them in all forms including financial assistance," FBCCI chief added.

He also said they have already informed the government about their willingness to assist the victim's family.

He said the business community will assist them after the instruction of the government.

He also urged the government to find out whether there was any conspiracy behind the brutal killings in BDR headquarters.

"We demand the culprits to be brought to book and urge the government to find out whether there was any conspiracy in the BDR rebellion," Annisul added.

However, the business leaders said the carnage will not affect the country's inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI).

They hailed the government for handling the situation successfully.

Apart from the FBCCI chief, president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association Md Fazlul Hoque, president of Foreign Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry Waliur Rahman Bhuyan addressed the programme.

President of International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh Mahbubur Rahman, former caretaker government adviser Syed Manzur Elahi, former FBCCI presidents Salman F Rahman and Mir Nasir Hossain, FBCCI first vice president Abul Kasem Ahmed, FBCCI vice president Abu Alam Chowdhury, president of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Abdul Hafiz Chowdhury, president of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry Zafar Osman joined the programme.

Besides, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association Anwar Alam Chowdhury Parvez, newly-elect BGMEA president Salam Murshedy, president of Bangladesh Association of Bankers Md Nazrul Islam Mazumdar also attended the programme.
