US Ambassador Patricia Butenis has urged the caretaker government to lift the ban on indoor politics so parties could contribute to the electoral reforms, reports UNB
"Longer the ban is kept in place, the more difficult it would be to enact reforms, it is as simple as that," she told reporters after a farewell meeting with Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami at city hotel Tuesday.
Butenis said political parties are the main ingredients of election and democratic process. "I once again would ask the government to withdraw the ban" in the interest of political reforms and assisting Election Commission for electoral reforms.
She said due process of law should be ensured for those who have been arrested on charges of corruption.
A Jamaat press release said Nizami told the Ambassador that his party is working hard to establish a healthy democratic and political system in the country. He said many things depend on the success of the caretaker government.
The Jamaat chief hoped that the government would be able to hold a free, fair and acceptable election.
Jamaat leaders Makbul Ahmed, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, Muhammad Qamaruzzaman, Barrister Abdur Razzak, Prof Tasneem Alam and Rafiqul Islam Khan were present in the meeting.
