CAAB to take over 3rd terminal today

Terminal to be fully operational by early next year

FE REPORT | April 06, 2024 00:00:00

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) will take over the much-talked about third terminal, an iconic infrastructure of Bangladesh' aviation sector, today (Saturday) as its construction is almost complete.

CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman said, "Aviation Dhaka Consortium, contractor of the third terminal, will hand over the building to us on Saturday."

He further said, "System integration, calibration and testing of different equipment of the third terminal has been completed. The terminal will be fully ready in October."

Insiders said although there are some constructions of the third terminal of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka yet to be completed, CAAB will take over it today, otherwise they will have to pay fine for each day under an obligation of the agreement.

Air Vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman said as per the government decision, a Japanese company would operate the third terminal under Public Private Partnership (PPP).

"As it will take the Japanese company some time to begin the operation of the third terminal, CAAB will start the initial operation on a limited scale, with its own manpower and assistance from Biman Bangladesh Airlines," added the CAAB chief.

The government has decided to operate and maintain the terminal through a Japanese consortium under a public-private partnership.

With the completion of the third terminal, the annual passenger handling capacity of HSIA will be 24 million, which is currently only eight million. It will also be able to handle 500,000 tons of cargo each year.

CAAB expects the necessary manpower will be available by early next year and the third terminal will be fully operational by then.
