Car driver killed as lift collapses in city

A private car driver was killed as an elevator of a six-storey building carrying him fell to the ground at Dhanmondi in the city on Saturday.
The victim was identified as Nuru Miah, 50, who hailed from Mehendiganj of Barisal district.
Dhanmondi police said Nuru was critically injured when the lift of the building plunged to the ground at noon after its ropes got snapped.
"People rushed to the building immediately after the incident and rescued critically injured Nuru Miah," sub-inspector of Dhanmondi police station Lal Mia told the FE.
"The injured was taken to Bangladesh Medical College Hospital, but duty doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead," he added.
According to Mr Lal Mia, the victim had been working for a widow at House 35, Road 15, Dhanmondi for last ten years.
The sub-inspector said they have found nothing fishy in the incident as of their initial inspection. "We assume it as a simple accident," he added.
