CHITTAGONG, Sept 26: The Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) has leased out four temporary cattle markets in the port-city at Tk 23.01 million.

The markets are Karnaphuli Bazar in Nur Nagar Housing area, Poster Par Bazar, Steel Mill Bazar and Patenga High School Bazar.

Sale of sacrificial animals in these markets started on Friday, as the holy Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated across the country on October 6. CCC Mayor M Manjur Alam visited the markets on Thursday.

Meanwhile, traders at two permanent cattle markets in the port-city - Sagorika and Bibirhat - and two temporary markets - Komol Mohajan Hat and Saltgola Crossing - are going to start selling sacrificial animals from Saturday.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Abdul Jalil Mondal has said policemen will be on patrol round the clock in the city's eight cattle markets and the city outskirts.

The decision was taken at a meeting with CCC senior officials and lease-holders of different cattle markets at the CMP headquarters on Thursday.

The meeting decided that members of CMP, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Armed Police Battalion (APBN) will remain on patrol across the city to ensure security of cattle traders. The police will also assist sellers and buyers to carry money during sale.

Veterinary physicians would be present in the cattle markets to check use of excessive steroids to make sacrificial animals fatty and healthy. Fake-note identifying machines would also be set up in each cattle market, the CMP commissioner added.
