CHITTAGONG, Jul 29: The Chittagong City Corporation has sought Tk 1.12 billion (Tk 112 crore) from the government to repair the roads left dilapidated by five days of rains and water-logging in the city.
A senior official of the CCC said they emailed the requisition to the LGRD ministry seeking release of the money for repair of potholes and ditches now littering the roads.
Vehicle operators alleged that most parts of the city roads and lanes were littered with potholes that made it difficult for vehicles to ply them.
Incessant rainfall and water logging made the roads and lanes unfit for traffic.
Of the 800 kilometres of roads in the city, at least 163 kilometres had been severely damaged, they alleged adding that the vehicle operators demanded immediate repair as the vehicles were getting inoperative, a leader of the city bus owners association said.
The CCC prepared a report stating the dilapidated condition caused by the recent incessant rainfall.
CCC mayor AJM Nasir Uddin took over on July 26 with the liabilities and outstanding dues worth Tk 2.50 billion (Tk 250 crore) inherited from the previous mayor.
So, the CCC was not in a position to take up the task of repairing the roads and lanes without any special allocation from the government, an engineer said.
The roads and lanes that require immediate repair include 2.50 kilometres of the CDA Avenue, the main thoroughfare in the city, 1.25 km SS Khaled Road, 2.0 km Court Road, 1.50 km Zakir Hossain Road, 2.0 Jubilee Road, 1.0km KC Dey Road, 1.0 km Mehdibag Road, 1.25 km Reboti Mohan Road and 1.50 km Surson Road.
When contacted, CCC chief executive officer Kazi Shafiul Alam said they sent a letter to the LGRD (Local Government and Rural Development) ministry on Tuesday evening seeking an allocation of Tk 1.12billion.
He said that out of about 1000 kilometres of roads and lanes of the CCC, over 120 kilometres of roads needed immediate repair as they were in a bad shape.
The CCC has 428 kilometres of roads carpeted, 150 kilometres brick-built, 60 kilometres built with stone concrete and 80 kilometres of kutcha road.
