CEC must be accountable to democratic govt: BNP

FE REPORT
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Saturday that the chief election commissioner (CEC) must be made answerable to a democratically elected government in future for holding a 'dummy' election on January 07 by splurging billions from the state coffers.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made this assertion while talking to the media at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan office in the capital.
He said the US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) and other global rights organisations along with diplomats of different countries, including an influential Australian senator, asked the government to cancel the just-past election and hold a fresh one after releasing all detained opposition leaders and activists from prisons.
Mr Rizvi further said that their demands for cancelling the national polls and releasing opposition leaders and activists were also reverberating across the world.
He alleged that opposition leaders, including BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, were passing days in a suffocating condition due to the government's barbaric oppressions.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and its standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Amir Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury were not getting medical treatment in prison, Mr Rizvi alleged.
He called upon the Awami League-led government to release the detainees immediately. Mr Rizvi demanded immediate release of over 50 other leaders of BNP and its associate bodies who are now languishing in jail.
