Charter amended to accommodate July warriors' status demand

The fifth clause of the July Charter was amended at the last momemnt to accommodate the demand of 'July Fighters' for recognition and guaranteeing future protection.
Prof Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, said Friday in a news release that the change was made through discussions with the July heroes and communication with political parties.
He also mentioned that through this, the necessary urgent amendments were made to reflect the demands of the July heroes.
Prof Riaz also read out the revised portion of the 5th clause at the charter-signing event, which includes legal immunity for the uprising warriors.
The readout states: "It will be ensured that all the victims of disappearances, murders and torture during the 16-year Awami League and anti-fascist democratic struggle in Bangladesh before the mass uprising and all the killings committed by some members of the fascist Awami League and its allied law- enforcement agencies during the July-August 2024 mass uprising are tried, that the martyrs are given state status, and that the families of the martyrs and the state heroes of the July wounded, the wounded July brave warriors are provided with appropriate assistance such as monthly allowances, due medical treatment, rehabilitation measures, and legal immunity, protection of fundamental rights and security of the families of the martyrs and the wounded brave fighters."
Prof Riaz said the commission will clearly and specifically present the government with the implementation of this commitment.
He also comments that there is no difference of opinion between the political parties and the consensus commission on this issue.
Earlier, July warriors clashed with law enforcers while demanding provision to ensure their protection and due status in the charter before the signing began.
