Chemical godowns to be built by June: Minister

The government has started building 54 temporary godowns at Shyampur in the city cost around Tk 800 million.
Once constructed, the inventories will store chemical products while ensuring public safety.
Industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun laid on Thursday the foundation stone of construction work of the godowns on 6.7 acres of land at Ujala Match Factory at Shyampur in Dhaka.
The move came after the last year's devastating fire in old Dhaka's Churihatta, killing 27 people
He said that many families were victims of fire incidents.
He said the construction work of the temporary godowns will be completed within the next six months.
Terming the present government business-friendly, the minister said the government will continue its support to commercial activities to give the economy a boost.
Earlier, the ministry of industries had taken up a project to construct godowns for storing chemical products temporarily to help relocate the inventories from the crowded old town hub.
Apart from the construction of temporary godowns, the government has also taken an initiative to build a permanent chemical village at Keraniganj in Dhaka following the deadly fire incidents.
The construction work is now going on, which is also expected to be complete at the soonest possible time, according to people familiar with the situation.
The godowns are being built on a temporary basis before the construction of chemical village.
A high official of the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) told the FE the construction for temporary godowns is among the priority projects of the government.
"Initially, the government will build 54 temporary godowns for safe preservation of chemicals," director of the project Md Liakat Ali told the FE on Thursday.
He said that apart from building godowns, a three-storey building will also be built there.
There will be some facilities like uninterrupted supplies of power and water.
For example, one water tank will be overhead and another underground, the BCIC official said.
Mr Ali said that chemical businessmen having government licences will get the priority in case of godown rental.
A high official of the ministry of industries told the FE the Bangladesh Navy will complete the construction work of temporary godowns.
He said the Navy secured the contract on December 24, 2019.
