Chill grips BD though sun seen in Dhaka, some dists

The sun has finally broken through the dense fog of winter in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh, according to reports from agencies.

A bit of sun was also seen in Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Gopalganj, Barishal, Patuakhali, Kishoreganj, and Sylhet.

However, Bangladesh is currently dealing with a mild cold wave, primarily affecting northern regions such as Madaripur, Gopalganj, Dinajpur, Barishal, and Bhola.

The cold wave, expected to linger for two to three days, is particularly impacting day laborers, children, and the elderly, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

"Dhaka may remain blanketed in moderate fog, but the daytime temperature may rise. It may feel less cold," he said.

The BMD's latest weather bulletin highlights a disparity in temperatures across the country, with the mercury dipping to a low of 9 degrees Celsius in Barishal, contrasting with a high of 27.1 degrees Celsius in Teknaf.

According to meteorological standards, temperatures ranging from 8 to 10 degrees Celsius are categorized as a mild cold wave, with the severity escalating as temperatures drop.

This weather pattern has also brought moderate to thick fog, particularly from midnight to morning, persisting until noon in some areas.

This has resulted in temporary disruptions in air navigation, inland river transport, and road communication, posing challenges to daily commutes and economic activities.

The lowest temperature in Dhaka was 14.8 degrees Celsius and the highest was 18.1 degrees Celsius.

Dense fog and cold weather have prevailed in Bangladesh since Jan 11.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department's forecast, the sky will be partially cloudy and the weather will remain mostly dry.

The BMD also predicted moderate to dense fog across the country from morning to mid-day.

The fog may disrupt air, road, and river transport, it noted.

Light cold waves have been sweeping through Madaripur, Gopalganj, Dinajpur, Barishal and Bhola.

However, the day and night temperatures across the country may rise a little, the BMD said.

On Wednesday, the Khulna Division is likely to experience some drizzle or light rain, said meteorologist Mallick.

"The fog will dissipate slightly after the rain, but the temperature will fall further."
