Chowdhury Alam jailed for 12 years

Dhaka city ward commissioner Chowdhury Alam was Sunday sentenced to 12 years rigorous imprisonment for extortion of about Tk 240 million (24 crore) tolls from Bangabazar complex during 2003-05, reports UNB.
Dhaka metropolitan first joint sessions judge KM Howlader handed down the verdict to Alam in a crowded court. He was also fined Tk 0.2 million, in default, two years more in jail.
Rahmat Ali, brother-in-law of Alam and co-accused in the case, tried in absentia, was awarded five years jail and fined Tk 0.1 million.
