City corporation candidates pass busy hours

FE REPORT | January 28, 2020 00:00:00

All mayoral and councillor candidates of the two city corporations (DNCC and DSCC) passed busy hours in campaigns and publicity rallies on Monday as the election day nears.

Elections of the two city corporations -- Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) -- will be held on February 01 and the candidates can carry out their election campaigns till January 30.

However, BNP nominated mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain alleged that the ruling party wants to vacate the election field to grab the voting result through filing false cases against his supporters.

He said, "Awami League-led miscreants were attacking BNP supporters and irony is that they were filing cases against our leaders and supporters."

He mentioned Wari thana police arrested five BNP supporters and leaders so far in this connection.

"We have informed the Election Commission about the attack on our campaigns at Gopibagh on Sunday," Israque also said.

He made the comment while speaking to the reporters at a views-exchanging meeting at the National Press Club on Monday.

"We will maintain a peaceful environment without leaving the polling ground like the past," he declared.

He urged the government to create a voter-friendly environment.

"Make arrangements so that people can cast their vote freely; we believe in changing power through peaceful voting," Israque added.

He alleged that Awami League councillor candidates and supporters launched a vicious attack on his campaign near his Gopibagh residence on Sunday.

"Many, including journalists, were injured. We feared that the ruling party supporters and candidates are trying to make a one-sided election field and that process has started," he claimed.

Isharque also conducted campaigns and rallies at Motijheel area on the day in which BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Nazrul Islam Khan also spoke.

Fazle Noor Taposh, the Awami League nominated mayoral candidate from the DSCC, alleged that BNP and its supporters were trying to spoil the existing good environment fearing obvious defeat in the election. Taposh made the comment while speaking at an election rally held at Sarulia in Demra on the day.

Atiqul Islam, Awami League nominated mayoral candidate for DNCC, spent time at the ward number 01 at Uttara area on the day.

He attended a rally oganised by the Awami League supported councillor candidate Afsar Uddin Khan.
