FE REPORT
Dhaka metropolis remained in holiday mode on Wednesday with a poor presence of people at the workplace as many holidaymakers are yet to return from their roots after Eid-ul-Azha celebrations.
Public, autonomous and private offices, including banks and financial institutions, reopened on Tuesday.
But the presence of employees was thin at public and private offices as many of them took leave for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Most of the shopping malls, business centres, schools, colleges and universities did not reopen and may take a few more days to resume full activities.
Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals of Muslims, was celebrated in the country with much enthusiasm and religious fervour on Sunday.
This year, government employees got four days' holiday at a stretch as July 08-09 were weekly holidays while July 10-11 were public holidays for Eid.
Almost all the streets of the capital wore a deserted look on Wednesday as people in their millions are now in their village homes to celebrate the festival.
Traffic on streets also registered very thin.
The everyday tailback was missing at Shapla Chattar, Purana Paltan, Gulistan, Moghbazar, Mohakhali, Farmgate, Bijoy Sarani intersection, Mohakhali level-crossing, Airport and Mirpur roads.
Visiting the secretariat, the FE found a yet-empty look at most ministries and divisions on Wednesday as most of the officials and employees are still on leave.
However, officials at emergency services were present at their respective offices.
It is expected that activities at public and private offices will be in full swing from next Sunday.
All the malls and markets remained closed on Wednesday. However, kitchen markets were open with poor trading.
"No congestion in the capital. The days are going like a dream. I want to travel as much as I can and don't want to spend my time in leisure…," says a CNG-run three-wheeler driver Sohel who reached Motijheel from Uttara area within half-hour on Wednesday.
Traffic police on duty were also seen in a relaxed mood as they did not require taking much pain to govern the city's streets due to light traffic on the streets.
