The residents of Dhaka suffered immensely on Friday as power outage hit almost all areas, including Mirpur, Uttara, Dhanmondi and Banani, from around 12:00 am.
Power cuts occurred due to grid failure amid daylong rainfall in the capital city.
The areas in question are served by the Dhaka Electric Supply Company Ltd (Desco).
Some areas under Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) were also affected for a short period of time during rain, according to residents.
However, Desco electric supply line was restored entirely by 5:00 pm on Friday, Desco managing director Kausar Ameer Ali told the FE.
Power outage triggered as a 230kV circuit breaker burst around 12:45 am, forcing the Aminbazar grid to fail. DESCO sources said power was partially restored in some parts of Mirpur at night, but it took 17 long hours to restore the entire area under the grid.
"We started the restoration process at 1:26 am," a spokesperson for DESCO told the media at night.
In response to the crisis, Desco implemented alternative power supply methods in crucial areas, including Gonobhaban and parts of Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara.
Desco managing director Kausar Ameer Ali told the FE that the power cut was primarily due to the collapse of the Aminbazar grid.
"Following the Aminbazar grid issue, both Agargaon and Kalyanpur grids also collapsed. But power was restored by 5:00 am after all grids were repaired. The situation is normal now."
Dhaka's power supply is managed by two distribution companies - DPDC and Desco.
Desco serves areas including Tongi, Uttara, Uttarkhan, Dakkhinkhan, Baridhara, Bashundhara, Khilkhet, Badda, Gulshan, Pallabi, Kafrul, Rupnagar, Ibrahimpur, Agargaon, Manipur and Kalyanpur.
Some DPDC areas, including the old part of Dhaka, also faced power cuts as transformers sparked and feeders tripped.
"The problems were resolved immediately at night," said DPDC deputy general manager Shamimul Haque Shamim.
