Clash with Rohingya drug addicts leaves 18 injured

COX'S BAZAR, May 2: At least 18 persons including police members were injured in an hour long clash between Rohingya drug addicts and villagers in Ukhia upazila of Cox's Bazar in early hours of Wednesday. The local administration deployed additional police and RAB personnel on the spot.

According to witnesses and police sources, a group of drug-addict Rohingya were people taking yaba pills at the night of holy Shab-e-Barat beside the Tanjimar Khula refugee camp. Local villagers protested against it and told them to abstain from taking yaba on the holy night.

But the addicts defied them and regrouped to attack the villagers at around 1:30 am. Later the clash spread inside and outside the Tanjimar Khula Rohingya refugee camp. On information, Additional Police Super (ASP) Afruzul Haq Tutul rushed to the spot from Cox's Bazar town with an additional police force. The police brought the situation under control firing blank shots.

When contacted, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Ukhia circle Chai Lawe Marma told this correspondent that at least 18 people including four police constables were injured during the hour long clash. The injured police members were released from Ukhia Upazila Health Complex after treatment, the ASP said.
