Colleges reopen tomorrow, CU Oct 24, SAU Sept 10

The National University authorities decided to resume the activities of all government and non-government colleges tomorrow (Saturday) as the government withdrew the closure order issued earlier, reports UNB.An official announcement Thursday said, "The government has decided to withdraw an order issued on August 22 for closure of all government and non-government colleges in divisional cities." Principals of the colleges have been asked to resume activities of their colleges, now that the situation arising out of an unwanted Dhaka University incident has improved.
On the other hand, the Chittagong University (CU) and the Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) decided Thursday to resume classes on October 24 and September 10 respectively.The Chittagong University syndicate decided to reopen the university on October 24 after Eid-ul-Fitr and Durga Puja vacations.
The syndicate at a meeting chaired by CU Vice-chancellor Badiul Alam also decided to open the CU dormitories for the students on October 23.The meeting dismissed the jobs of three university teachers for their long absence. The teachers reportedly went abroad and have not yet returned.
The dismissed teachers are Abid Jaman of the Philosophy Department, Shafiqur Rahman of the Journalism Department and Fakir Hossain Khandaker of the Marketing Department.
On the other hand, the SAU syndicate in a meeting Thursday took the decision following the withdrawal of the government order regarding closing down
universities in the wake of a student unrest.
It also decided to open the dormitories of the university for students on September 9.
However, the Dhaka University (DU) authority appointed Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique acting dean of the Social Science faculty and Prof Ishtiaque Mahmud acting dean of the Biological Science faculty. The deans of those faculties Dr Harunur Rashid and Dr Anwar Hossain arrested on charge of inciting disturbance on the campus are now detained in jail.
Prof Arefin said a meeting of the Deans Committee would be held at 9:30am on Saturday.
The Dhaka University syndicate meets on Saturday to discuss the prospect of reopening the university closed sine die on August 22.
The meeting was earlier scheduled for September 11.
All the public universities were closed following a student unrest on the DU campus that had spread to other universities and escalated to street vandalism.
Amid spreading violence from campus to campus, the caretaker government had issued the directive closing down all public universities and the aforesaid colleges for an indefinite period.
