Congestion still cripples commuting in capital

The capital's usually congested streets got clogged Monday, trapping many in tailbacks for long, as myriad people came out on a last-minute buying binge or on outbound journey for Eid festival.

Witnesses said many had to walk down to their workplaces and markets or transport terminals, getting down from vehicles.

Such traffic snarl-up occurred despite a large number of city-dwellers already having left the capital for their respective native homes for celebrating the holy Eid-ul-Fitr with their near and dear ones.

The traffic jams were seen mainly in Gulistan,Paltan, New Market, Maghbazar, Malibagh, Tikatuli, Jatrabari, Banani, Airport and Uttara areas.

Those who would celebrate the Eid in the city went for last-minute shopping at different malls. Huge rush of people to the shopping malls mostly contributed to creating the traffic jams.

Some of them (city-dwellers) went out on their own cars as they thought less traffic could be on the roads due to the ongoing public holiday. And such car caravans, besides innumerous rickshaws, contributed to the crippling of traffic particularly in front of the shopping malls.

However, intermittent rain on the day did not deter the city-dwellers from going out on shopping.

When contacted, a high official of traffic department of Dhaka told the FE that they deployed additional manpower to control traffic jams to facilitate smooth journey of holidaymakers to reach their respective destinations for celebrating the biggest religious festival of the Muslims.
