FE Report
At least 15 people, including a policeman, were injured on Friday in a clash between policemen and taxicab drivers, who went to Tejgaon police station to get their arrested colleagues released.
Witnesses said nearly 200 taxicab drivers went to the police station at about 12:30pm to apparently lay a siege and protest against the arrest of eight drivers on Thursday.
The police used batons to disperse the agitating drivers, who also damaged several passing vehicles protesting the police action. They also set fire to two taxicabs passing through the area during the demonstration.
Tejgaon police station chief Mahbubur Rahman said the arrested cabbies were freed on undertakings. "We'll take legal action against those who forcibly tried to enter police station," he said.
Trouble began Thursday afternoon when a traffic sergeant signaled a taxicab driver to pull over at Sonargaon intersection, but the driver left his vehicle and ran away.
A police driver later drove the cab and parked it beside the underpass of Karwanbazar. Some seven or eight taxicab drivers gathered there in a little while and parked their cabs haphazardly.
Taxicab drivers later exchanged heated words with the police driver and beat him up. The action led to the arrest of eight cab drivers.
