Bangladesh's air travel sector has rebounded even as most of the countries across the world are feeling the pain of aviation downturn, a top travel trader said Thursday.
"Our recovery is really outstanding. Air passengers travel is now growing at a double-digit rate," said Anis Ahmed, managing director Galileo Bangladesh .
"The global downturn started in last September. Our aviation sector experienced a brief jolt after that. But we've recovered from the shock since February," Mr Ahmed told a press conference in the city, organised to launch the opinion poll for awarding the "Best Airline of the Year-2008."
Instituted in 2007, Galileo and local travel journal 'Bangladesh Monitor' is jointly sponsoring the award for the second time to honour domestic and foreign airlines operating to and from Bangladesh . Upscale hotel Westin Dhaka , Finlays Tea and Eastern Bank are co-sponsors of the event.
Kazi Wahidul Alam, editor of Bangladesh Monitor, said opinions would be taken on 12 categories and the awards would then be determined on the basis of highest scores.
"Last year's award created incredible enthusiasm among stakeholders in the aviation sector. I think, this year it will draw huge response as well," Mr Alam said.
Stephane R. Masse, general manager at Westin, said such an award is an opportunity to judge the services standard of airlines operating in Bangladesh , based on the opinions of frequent flyers.
