Country's OBI score improves

Bangladesh scored 48 in Open Budget Index (OBI) 2010 which shows that the government provides people with some information on budget and financial activities during the course of the budget year.
The Open Budget Index (OBI) is an initiative of Washington-based The International Budget Project (IBP), produced by 94 civil society organizations and research institutions all these 94 countries.
Unnayan Shamannay, a civil society think-tank Monday launched the open Budget Index 2010 at a press conference on the launching of Bangladesh findings of Open Budget Initiatives 2010 at its conference room.
The global launching of OBI 2010 took place in Washington on October 19 last and the regional launching will be held at Sri Lanka on November 24, 2010.
Bangladesh's OBI score increased from 39 to 48 from 2006 to 2010 as the country now provides more comprehensive information on its budget.
The neighbouring country India and Sri Lanka both scored 67, Nepal scored 45, Pakistan 38 and Afghanistan 21, according to the Open Budget Index 2010.
M. Abu Eusuf, Associate Professor of Department of Development Studies of University of Dhaka who conducted the study in Bangladesh addressed the press conference as a key note speaker.
AHM Mustafa Kamal MP, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Finance was present as chief guest at the press conference. Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled, emeritus fellow of Unnayan Shamannay and Chairman of Bangladesh Krishi Bank presided over the function.
