Countrywide listing of criminals and extortionists underway

FE REPORT
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government has started preparing comprehensive lists of criminals and extortionists across the country as part of a decisive drive to restore law and order.
"We're preparing lists of extortionists and criminals in an unbiased way across the country, starting from the capital Dhaka," he said.
The home minister was talking to newsmen after a meeting with senior officials of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and officers-in-charge (OCs) of 50 police stations under its jurisdiction at the DMP headquarters in the capital on Wednesday.
"A list of terrorists, habitual offenders, and those causing social disorder has already been prepared," he said
Mentioning that establishing the rule of law is one of top priorities of the government, he said the drive would be conducted fairly and without bias.
He said extortionists and repeat offenders will be brought to justice through a systematic listing process, in a move aimed at strengthening law and order in the capital.
Mr Salahuddin emphasised that restoring public confidence and ensuring safety are among the government's top priorities.
"The police play a vital role in upholding the rule of law. Although the department faced setbacks under a previous regime, we are working to rebuild trust and ensure that the police can return to their historic role," he continued.
The police are genuinely the friends of the people, he said, adding: "Past misconduct was not the fault of the institution but the result of a few individuals under a fascist regime.
Police's chain of command will be strictly followed, and no arbitrary orders will be tolerated, he said, adding that law would be enforced impartially.
The home minister said the government's highest priority is to maintain peace and rule of law, and also provide a sense of security to citizens.
The minister also acknowledged shortage of equipment in the police department and outlined steps to ensure a citizen-friendly approach.
"Professionalism must guide the chain of command. Lower-ranking officers will no longer bypass their superiors," he said.
At the same time, senior officials, including the Police Commissioner and IGP, may communicate directly when necessary, he added.
About traffic management, the home minister said a dedicated cell has been formed to tackle congestion in Dhaka.
