Court grants 5-day police remand to WorldTel MD

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Gulam Rabbani Tuesday granted five days' police remand to managing director of the World Communication Investment Inc (WCII) Nayeem Mehtab Chowdhury.
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) rounded up Nayeem Mehtab Chowdhury from his Gulshan residence Monday last who is allegedly involved in the misappropriation of Tk 460.0 million of bank money.
On Tuesday, the Motijheel police station produced Nayeem before the court and sought seven-days' remand. Nayeem allegedly misappropriated Tk 310.0 million from National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and Tk 150.0 million from the head office of Sonali Bank, both are under Motijheel Police Station.
But, the CMM court granted remand for five days, sources said. Police sources said they are conducting raids in different parts of the city to round up two of his accomplices.
WorldTel Bangladesh Limited chairman Amjad H Khan filed a case against Nayeem on June 11, 2007 with Motijheel Police Station. Later, the case was transferred to the RAB for investigation.
Earlier, acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-3 along with police raided the house of Nayeem in Gulshan-1 and arrested him at about 8:30am Monday last.
RAB sources said Nayeem in association with former state minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, misappropriated Tk 150.0 million from Sonali Bank and Tk 310.0 million from National Bank of Pakistan.
He forged the signatures of the chairman of WorldTel Holding Limited and the Indian based Sam Pitroda who was living in USA while withdrawing the money on plea of purchasing telecom equipment from abroad.
Nayeem told the reporters that he came close to Lutfozzaman Babar through his friend Badal who is now in Singapore.
"Babar has taken Tk 70 million as his share of the money he withdrew from the banks," said Nayeem.
