A Dhaka Court on Monday issued an arrest warrant against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed over corruption allegations.
The court also ordered the government to request the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to issue a Red Notice against him.
Judge of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court in Dhaka, Md Zakir Hossain, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam confirmed the court order to the FE.
An Interpol Red Notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.
Earlier on the day, ACC Deputy Director Hafizul Islam filed the petition with the court, saying the former IGP is at large abroad and he should be brought to justice. As he is staying abroad, an arrest warrant should be issued against him through Interpol.
After holding a hearing on the matter, the court issued the arrest warrant against Benazir Ahmed.
The court on January 13 this year ordered the authorities concerned to seize tax files of Benazir Ahmed, and his elder daughter Farhin Rishta Binte Benazir.
Earlier on January 8, the court ordered to seize tax files of Benazir's wife Jishan Mirza and second daughter Tahsin Raisa Binte Benazir.
On December 15, 2024, the ACC filed four cases against Benazir Ahmed and his wife and daughters.
According to the documents of the cases, the former IGP amassed wealth of Tk94.4 million beyond his known source of income and concealed information about properties of Tk26.2 million.
The anti-graft body in its plea said Jishan Mirza amassed properties of Tk316.9 million beyond her known source of income and concealed information about wealth of Tk160.1 million.
Benazir's elder daughter Farhin Rishta Binte Benazir is accused of amassing illegal wealth of Tk87.5 million and his second daughter Tahsin is accused of amassing illegal wealth of Tk 55.9 million.
Earlier, the ACC summoned the former IGP for quizzing him, but he skipped it.
It is said from different sources that Benazir and his family members had left the country on May 4 in 2024 before the orders of the court passed.
