A Dhaka court Tuesday overturned the verdict of a trial court that found three Dhaka University (DU) teachers guilty of inciting student unrest in August 2007 and sentenced them each to two years in prison in January last year, reports bdnews24.com.
President Iajuddin Ahmed had issued special pardons for the three on the day of the verdict, but the judgment itself was not cancelled at the time.
Dhaka's first metropolitan additional sessions judge Mohammad Abul Bashar dismissed the verdict after hearing the petition of Prof Harun-or-Rashid, Prof Sadrul Amin and Prof Anwar Hossain.
They had filed the petition on Feb 25, 2008 seeking the withdrawal of the judicial conviction on the grounds that the president had pardoned them. Hearing of the petition ended on July 2 this year.
Third Speedy Trial Court judge Mohammad Golam Robbani had convicted them on Jan 22 last year for encouraging students to break emergency powers rules during campus riots sparking on August 22, 2007.
