The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) is celebrating its 139 years of existence today (Saturady). One of the oldest natural ports of the subcontinent and prime sea port of the country, it is handling cargoes and containers under the management of CPA.

The maritime gateway of Bangladesh achieved a historic milestone by handling the highest number of containers in 2025. It handled a total of 3.409069 million (34,09,069) TEUs of containers.

According to sources in the CPA, compared to 2024, it saw an increase of 4.07 percent in containers and 11.43 percent in cargo handling and 10.50 percent in ship handling.

Earlier, the sea port handled a total of 3.27 million TEUs of containers, 123 million tonnes of cargo in 2024. The prime sea port also handled 3,867 ships in 2024.

The revenue collection for 2025 was Tk 54.60 billion (5,460.18 crore), an increase of 7.55% over the revenue collection for 2024.

CPA Director Omar Faruk said that in 2025 the port broke all previous records by handling maximum containers and cargo.

He also said, "Various types  of infrastructure development including port automation service facilities, introduction of e-gate passes, and modernization of the container operating system are also a significant part of this success. The sincere efforts of the port users and their overall cooperation have contributed significantly to this success. However, if it were not for the NBR shutdown for 2/3 days in the last year, the number of container handling would have been more."

He added, "Chittagong port used to handle more than 92% of export and import cargoes of Bangladesh and 98% of containers. We have already taken up many projects for development of Chittagong sea port."

CPA Chairman Rear Admiral SM Monriuzzaman told The Financial Express, "Chittagong port has significantly enhanced operational efficiency through a multi pronged modernization drive-achieving record container volumes, faster

berthing, and streamlining processes. Chittagong port handles over 90% of Bangladesh's import-export activities and 98% of the Bangladesh-bound containers."

"The port's facilities accommodate container and bulk carriers, making it crucial for regional commerce. Its infrastructure, including container terminals and cargo-handling systems, supports efficient port operations. As a gateway to the globe, Chittagong Port plays a key role in economic development, connecting Bangladesh to global markets. Chittagong Port also acts as a center for global connectivity, exclusiveness and sustainable future of Bangladesh."
