Crops on 0.35m hectares of land damaged by 2nd spell of floods

Crops cultivated in about 0.35 million hectares of land has been totally damaged following early September floods in the country, according to sources of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
Sources said the flood damaged transplanted Aman (T-Aman), Aush, seed-beds for the T-Aman and different kinds of vegetables in 230 Upazilas under 33 districts.
The country faced flash floods due to heavy rainfall and onrush of waters from upper stream in July-August period causing damage to crops worth Tk22 billion across 39 districts.
DAE sources said crops and seedlings of different kinds of vegetables covering 0.55 million hectares of lands were inundated by flood waters.
Sources said agricultural lands in Sherpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Comilla, Serajganj, Sylhet, Jamalpur, Kharachhari, Rangamati, Sunamganj, Feni, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar were severely damaged following the flood.
Sources said 37,000 hectares of land in Sherpur, 27000 hectares in Gaibandha, 43,000 hectares in Kurigram, 13,500 hectares in Comilla, 9500 hectares in Serajganj, 39500 hectares in Sylhet, 33,000 hectares in Jamalpur, 7000 hectares in Khagrachhari, 24,000 hectares in Rangamati, 35,000 hectares in Feni, 24,500 hectares in Chittagong were submerged by flood waters.
T-Aman was cultivated in about 4.9 million hectares with a production of target of 12.47 million tonnes but the September floods destroyed most of the plantation.
The farmers could not plant broadcasting Aman (B-Aman) due to floods during July-August period but when they cultivated the late season T- Aman variety, it was washed away by floods of early September.
The farmers now await to sow vegetables and other Rabi crops in their fields.
However, the DAE is preparing rehabilitation programmes for the crops losses caused by the successive floods.
