CHITTAGONG, Jan 16: Chittagong University (CU) honoured former President of India Pranab Mukharjee by conferring honorary D. Lit degree on him on Tuesday.

CU Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury handed over the degree memento, a crest, a wrapper and symbol of the university to him at a gorgeous function at the university.

After receiving the honour Pranab Mukharjee expressed his gratitude to CU authority. He said it is a great honour that has been offered to a simple man like him.

"I feel extremely honoured, dignified and graceful," he added.

Referring to the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the former Indian President said it was very brutal. Bangabandhu was killed within three and a half years of the birth of the nation, which he led to victory through decades-old struggle.

Through assassination of the great leader the killers tried to destroy the nation he was trying to build up bit by bit. A nation was killed immediately after its birth, he further said.

Pranab Mukharjee said another great leader of India and Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi was also assassinated on January 30, 1948, within six months of the country's independence.

"Why are the great political leaders of this subcontinent targeted by the killers again and again?"

"I would urge political scientists, social scientists, historians and pundits to study and work out the causes behind these political killings. The universities should initiate research on why some people come out of barracks for killing the national political leaders," he added.

The CU VC said the university is proud of offering the D Lit degree to Pranab Mukharjee, a great friend of Bangladesh.
