The Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) is looking for ways and means to improve the disposal system of solid waste generated in the city.
The DCC in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) formulated a master plan to clean Dhaka within the year 2015.
The plan encompasses every aspect of solid waste such as raising public awareness, primary collection, secondary collection, final disposal sites, administration and financial management.
As part of the plan, JICA selected seven most vulnerable of the 90 wards of the city. The DCC and JICA started community level kickoff meetings for promoting ward based approach (WBA) in solid waste management, experts of DCC and JICA said Saturday while speaking in ward 5.
"The objective of this meeting is to publicise WBA for clean Dhaka project including promotion of participatory solid waste management" said JICA expert team deputy chief advisor Mahmoud Riad.
Series of activities will be carried out together with community people to improve current solid waste management system in the area as the dwellers of ward 5 alone produced about 55 tonnes of solid waste every day, he added.
