The death toll from flood-related incidents like drowning, waterborne diseases and snakebites rose to 615 with 28 more deaths reported in the 24 hours until Tuesday morning, reports UNB.According to official statistics, 3,878 more people were affected by diarrhoea in 39 flood-affected districts during the period as floodwaters continued to recede in many districts.
A bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said the Brahmaputra-Jamuna basin is likely to start receding from today (Wednesday) and the FFWC was not expecting another spell of flood in the Brahmaputra basin now as monsoon activities decreased largely over the basin in and out side Bangladesh.
It, however, said the Ganges-Padma basin may continue to swell further but at a slower rate in next 24-72 hours. "The flood situation in the districts of Manikganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Gopalganj, Chandpur and Dohar and Nawabganj upazilas of Dhaka is likely to improve or remain unchanged," the bulletin said. It said small rivers surrounding Dhaka and Narayanganj registered fall and the rivers are expected to fall further in the next 24-72 hours. The flood situation around Dhaka city, especially in its eastern part, is likely to improve in the next 24-72 hours, the bulletin said.
Some 10.5 million people of 39 districts have been affected by the floods, which started rolling in on July 30 and engulfed most parts of the country.
