War-crime convict Allama Delwar Hossain Sayeedi passed away on Monday night while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). He was 83, report agencies. Dhaka Central Jail Jailer Mahbubul Islam confirmed the matter
Sayeedi was taken to Shahabuddin Medical College in Dhaka Sunday after he complained of chest pain.
Later, the hospital authorities referred him to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for better treatment.
The war crimes tribunal sentenced Sayeedi to death in February 2013 for crimes against humanity during 1971.
On February 17, 2018 Bangladesh's Supreme Court commuted the death sentence given to Sayeedi to life imprisonment.
Sayeedi was one of the country's most prominent Islamic preachers, drawing hundreds of thousands to preaching sessions when he was still active.
