Students favouring quota reforms Friday staged demonstration on the Dhaka University campus, protesting the ouster of several students from Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall Thursday night.

The protestors under the banner of Bangladesh Shadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad demanded immediate removal of the hall provost to avert street protest again.

Having infuriated by the ouster, students gathered at the university campus with placards and chanted slogans against such action.

In the protest programme at the premise of Raju Bhaskorjo (Raju Sculpture), joint convener of the parishad Nurul Huq alleged that the university administration took the move only to create panic and fear among the students who were vocal in quota-reform protest.

"Ousting the students from the residential hall at midnight proves the moral degradation of the university administration. We ask the authorities to bring back the students showing due honour to them," said Mr Huq.

He called upon the university authorities to remove hall provost Prof Sabita Rizwana immediately and warned of taking to the street again along with the general students.

He also said that the university authorities can take necessary action against students over any misdeed but the way students were ousted from their dormitory is totally 'unexpected and unjust'.

The platform recently launched countrywide demonstration demanding reforms in the country's quota system in civil service.

Tensions mounted in the country's largest public educational institution from the early hours after the news of ousting several students spread.

The authorities of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall ousted a number of female students from the dormitory for allegedly spreading rumours through social media. The students were handed over to their guardians.

Meanwhile, DU Vice Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman told reporters that three students of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall were handed over to their guardians to protect the dignity of other hall students as they were allegedly spreading fake news on Facebook.

Backing the decision, he said it was the responsibility of the hall authorities to inform the guardians about such unethical practices.

"It was done to safeguard the dignity of the hall and all the students and the hall authorities did a good job by doing so," he said.
