Dengue takes worrisome turn

As many as 889 patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country on Monday as the dengue outbreak has taken a worrisome turn.

Signalling an alarming situation, the highest number of hospitalisation owing to dengue was recorded in 24 hours on the day. In the latest daily update, the deadly mosquito-borne disease claimed three more lives.

The total death toll from dengue hit 76 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Among the hopspitalised patients, 574 were admitted to several hospitals in Dhaka.

A total of 13,843 dengue patients received treatment in various public and private hospitals in the country so far since January, DGHS said. Among them, 9,664 were admitted to the hospitals in Dhaka, it added.

Meanwhile, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Monday continued its month-long anti-dengue drive and campaign. Its mobile courts conducted several drives and fined five entities, including four government offices, Tk 2.5 million.

They found Aedes larvae on the premises of the state-owned companies- Petrobangla, Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), BTMC and Jamuna Oil. The organisations were fined Tk 500,000 each.

While leading the drive in Karwan Bazar, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said that dengue is spreading in Dhaka and other parts of the country. In this situation, it is sad to find Aedes mosquito larvae in these places.

Chairman of Petrobangla Zanendra Nath Sarker said, "We keep the premises of our office clean. We will look into the matter to find out how it happened. It might have happened due to the negligence of the cleaning staff members. Action will be taken against them."
