DESCO draws flak over delays in project work

FE REPORT | June 18, 2021 00:00:00

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Thursday heavily criticised DESCO for taking much time than required to install 24 electricity substations.

He expressed the dissatisfaction while inaugurating operations of the substations at a virtual event, presided over by DSECO chairman Sheikh Faizul Amin.

The Dhaka Electric Supply Company Ltd (DESCO) had awarded the job to a consortium of Siemens Ltd India and Siemens Bangladesh on September 29, 2017.

The job was supposed to be implemented within 18 months, but the consortium took 44 months to install the 33/11 kilovolt (KV) substations, sources said.

Smelling rat in the construction works, Mr Hamid also opined for engaging a third party to check the quality of these substations.

Some 450,000 new electricity consumers will, however, be benefited with these newly installed substations which are expected to reduce the systems loss and remove the low-voltage problems.

Uttara third phase and Purbachal areas would get quality electricity supply, as a result.

Power secretary Md Habibur Rahman and DESCO managing director Md Kawsar Amir Ali also spoke at the event.
